Glad I went, Glad to be home

GenCon Well, we just got back from GenCon 2010 last night.  I didn't post at all on the trip -- I'm apparently a real dope -- but I had a great time -- we played a lot of D&D, spent a lot of time cruising the dealer hall, and saw a lot of great stuff.

Another Summer, Another GenCon, and a brand new game shop in Wichita

It's almost here.  Or, there, really.  And I'll be there soon.

This year we're going to be only playing in one tournament, because the Goodman one (the one we won last year) won't be happening.  Apparently we broke it?  Anyway, the other problem with the tournament scene this year is that the big D&D Championship is only two rounds -- the first round is going to be a huge bloodbath, I fear, and there won't be much time for getting our bearings.

Of course, that doesn't mean we're not excited.

Shared Campagin: Can 3 DMS Share a game?

So, we're kicking around the idea of three of us sharing a campaign world -- there's a lot to figure out about how this will work, but it's going to be interesting to see if we can pull it off.  We're frustrated with our current system, with the three of us running our own separate games, because it leaves us with no continuity -- there's very little ongoing story in any of these games -- and the story that exists within a given minicampaign falls away completely when we swap DMs.  We want to change that, even if it means more work.

Planning an Epic Campaign

I'm not doing a whole lot of DMing at the moment, but I have some planning to do -- in a few months I'll be taking over the main group's game and trying to figure out what to do with a group of 7 very good players that will take them from level 21 to 26.  That's right, Epic Level play.

Saving My Own Game: Break Out of the Combat Rut

One of the things I really spent a lot of time thinking about while traveling to and from DDXP was some of the frustrations I have with the way our current game plays.  We seem to be playing only a part of the game, not really enjoying the full, deep experience of playing D&D.

Battle Interactive

image1517484185.jpgThis is the first time doing the Battle Interactive. I'm going to make some notes as we go along.

We are playing with a DM we have played with before -- he uses candy for minis, which is isn't always my favorite, but we know Penn is good, so it's all cool.

The format is pretty cool -- a massive, thirty table collaborative paralell adventure.

DDXP Friday

image1316354816.jpgToday I am going to be playing all day, which is cool.

To begin with, I'm playing the middle heroic special. My table is fun -- a good , capable group with a ton of healing-- two warlords and a pacifist priest.

Later today, I'm playing something called the battle interactive, a double round special event that is apparently very cool.

Dark Sun Preview

image145982564.jpgThe dark sun preview adventure is pretty cool. I never played DS back in the day, so it's all pretty new to me.

I'm playing a Thri'kreen shaman, and enjoying little pleasures like calling the Goliath "mud man" and the humans "pinks.

My favorite new mechanic, though, is Reckless Breakage. This is the mechanic that represents the poor quality of equipment.

slot 1: Scourgey Scourge of the Scourgeguard

image1974032369.jpgPlaying the first Convention special adventure -- I *might* not have the name of the adventure quite right. The word Scourge was in there somewhere.

This is a fun table. Playing with a human fighter named Benedict, played by a guy whose laugh I know ..... Trying to remember which podcast I remember it from.

Early Rising at DDXP

The parade of the geeks has started -- we're trickling down from our hotel rooms and in off the street to kick off the convention.  I was surprised, walking up to the registration table, to see that only a few of the games are sold out yet.  I hope that just means people are coming to the con without having preregistered.

Is it a bad sign that Tom and I were the first ones to register this morning?  Are we desperate nerds, or just early rising nerds?
