Fiasco-Based Character Relationships

One of my players (Hi Rolando!) recently mentioned the Fiasco-based character relationship system we created for a D&D campaign in a letter he wrote in to the Metagamers Anonymous podcast.   I thought I'd post it so listeners could see what we did.

4 dice per player.  Take turns picking up a die and using it to declare something. 

Between each pair of players there will be a Relationship.  That relationship gets a detail.

So, taking a concept that was intended to be a showcase for one game system, and turning it into another is not trivial.  Luckily, Savage Worlds has a long history of tackling this sort of project, so I'm not too worried about the transition.

I ran my second "Chosen Ones" one-shot yesterday at a local game day. 

I had a good table of fun, good-natured players, and I think everyone had a good time, but the gameplay experience still felt off to me. And, in the end, I feel like I'm not happy with FATE.

Don't get me wrong. I really like it as a system -- and I really, really want to play it. I just don't think I'm a good gamemaster for FATE. I've been trying to make it work, putting a lot of effort into it, and yet I feel like I'm just not quite hitting all the notes I want out of a game. 

My Ode to LiveScribe Pens

I love gadgets. Always have, probably always will.  But few have become as critical to me as LiveScribe Pens.  

The technology is pretty cool.  It's a pen that creates a digital version of what you write, and as an option can sync an audio recording of what's going on around you while you're writing those notes.  It doesn't trascribe your handwriting into text (well, the newest one tries, but you need EXCELLENT handwriting to make use of it). But having your own notes and the audio to go with it is a huge benefit to me both at work and in my gaming.  

Necessary FATE

We started playing Necessary Evil a while back, played through about six sessions, and were having a good time with the game.  That particual group has trouble managing to meet, but we had a solid core, and the story was going along okay. 

But, I've always had a wandering eye for game systems, and I had been a FATE core backer, so I quickly started thinking about how to convert the game to FATE core. We created versions of the group's Savage Worlds characters with the FATE rules, and kept going. 

The Chosen Ones


Chosen Ones is set in a slightly modified version of our modern day world, one in which psychic powers are real, and have been recently revealed in a public way. Then the internet got involved, and got fanboy enthusiasm all over things.  Now Jedi Knights and Vancian Wizards join forces with Bene Gesserit nuns and Wiccans to try to protect their community against what appears to be government coverup and abductions.

It's been a couple of years since I actively used the Radiating Gnome site, and it seems like a good time to revive the site and the work that I was doing there. It's been a few years since I actively blogged anywhere, and it's going to feel good to get this going again. So, the site is back. The old one is still out there, archived for whatever reason, but no one seems to have known it was there but the spammers. Hope they don't miss it too bad. There will be more here soon!
